One of my favorite parts of science communication is diving into a new study and finding ways to explain complex and convoluted research to a lay audience and helping people understand the context of new research findings. Writing press releases and other communications content for universities and hospitals is one of my favorite tasks as a freelancer.

These articles typically involve an interview with a subject matter expert, usually a university researcher. This person typically has recently published some new research or has other news to share, like they’re onboarding patients for a clinical trial or have won an award. Writing these articles involves reading the original research of the scientist and ensuring I have a good understanding of the context around it. I may do secondary interviews with other researchers, lab members, or collaborators to bolster the story.
