2022

2022 was a time of adjustments.

As a family, we adjusted to having two children. Thanks to the Connecticut Paid Leave program, I took 12 weeks of parental leave at the start of the year.

Maya has been a delight of a baby, sleeping great and eating great, and just being the most adorable thing all around. Cora entered full-time preschool in the Fall and had surgery to remove her adenoids and tonsils in November, which had enlarged and infected and destroyed her previously excellent sleep.

As a business, I took the opportunity of parental leave break to drop some journalism clients that no longer suited me. I decided to focus my freelance activity on content marketing and communications work for hospitals and universities.

I’ve been slowly adjusting my schedule from being off for leave to freelancing full-time. I began a contract role as a writer/editor for UCSF Health and took on three managing editor roles at Contently. This added more regular hourly anchor work to my daily roster — it took some time to figure out how to divide my time and prioritize the work.

I continued creating content for Verywell Health and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America through HealthDay. I also added some article assignment clients to my roster, including Stanford Medicine.

Freelance Business Roundup

In 2022, my freelance business made $51,632.42 from 7 clients. My average hourly rate for the year was $76.31. My highest-invoiced month was July at $9,337.75 due to many hours spent subbing on Contently ME accounts. My lowest was December at $3,352.50 due to time off in November for Cora’s surgery and Thanksgiving, plus a slow holiday season.
